Who is man? This question is as old as humanity. Mythology, religion, science and art hve all tried in different ways to answer this question. As Hegel said, philosophy comes later and only starts its flight in the twilight. But what is philosophy? Philosophy means to think. To think means to follow the trace of the meaning of life that reveals itself in human existence. Philosophy thus means to think ourselves about the meaning of our life. What is life? What is the meaning of suffering and death? What is evil, beauty, truth? How can we live well and meaningful? These questions should be discussed during the events of PhiloArt.

Contemplation presupposes that we have learnt how to hear and see. It is the ability to let entities be free so that may show themselves to us as they are. Contemplation is part of the art of good living. Human life is never immediately; it can only succeed as a form of art.

Contemplation reveals itself in human discourse. But this discourse is at home within the art of good living. Only when we live together can we truly talk with one another. And only in this discussion can we think about the meaning of our life. The week of contemplation are a form of the art to think and live well.

Summer School

 

PhiloArt is a meeting place of philosophy and art in Mesnil-Follemprise. Besides philosophy as the art to live well art is the starting point of our contemplation. During the weeks of contemplation several excursions are planned.

Normandy is one of the most beautiful and cultural historical richest parts of France. The capital Rouen is of itself worth a journey. Mesnil-Follemrpise is a small village in the Pays de Bray and surrounded by the spectacular Forêt d’Eawy.

Martin Heidegger’s Path of Thinking

During this week central texts of Heidegger will be read and discussed. The aim of the week is to provide an overview of his work. Unknown recordings and film footage of Heidegger will be presented as well. All participants are invited to present a paper on Heidegger.

The costs of a summer school week are 250 Euro a person. I n this amount the course fee, reader, lunch and dinner, and excursions are included. The cost of lodging is not included. The participants will be lodged near Mesnil-Follemprise (in Naufchatel-en-Bray). A list of hotels, b&b’s and the program will be mailed upon request.

Alfred Denker (Jg. 1960) is a philosopher and makes documentary films. From 1989 until 2005 he was director of the Centre Philosophique Les Trois Hiboux in France. He now is the director of the Martin-Heidegger-Archive in Meßkirch (Germany ). Since more than 30 years he tries to find new ways to do philosophy. Besdies weeks of contemplation PhiloArt organizes exhibitions and concerts and produces documentaries. A film about the life and work of Otto Wesendonck is  in production, a film on Sally Mann and Georg Trakl is planned.

 

 

Mesnil-Follemprise lies between Rouen (35 km) and Dieppe (25 km) and is part of the departement Seine-Maritime.
